Çatalhöyük Day Tour From Istanbul
Journey to the Neolithic Past ( Çatalhöyük Day Tour From Istanbul )
Çatalhöyük: A Unique Witness to Early Human Development
Located on the Southern Anatolian Plateau, the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük spans approximately 14 hectares and stands as a significant testament to a pivotal phase in human development— the transition to settled communal life. This transition marked the beginnings of agriculture and hunting, alongside other critical social changes and advancements.
Çatalhöyük consists of two mounds. The larger Eastern Mound dates back to between 7400 BCE and 6200 BCE, encompassing 18 Neolithic settlement layers. These layers contain wall paintings, reliefs, sculptures, and other artistic elements that symbolize social organization and the shift to a settled lifestyle. The Western Mound, on the other hand, reflects the cultural characteristics of the Chalcolithic Period, dated between 6200 BCE and 5200 BCE. Together, these features make Çatalhöyük a crucial piece of evidence for understanding the transition from villages to urban life over more than 2,000 years in the same region.
The site’s unique architecture is characterized by closely packed, adjoining houses with no streets, where entry was through the roofs. Although other Neolithic sites have been discovered in the Middle East and Anatolia, Çatalhöyük holds exceptional universal value due to its unparalleled combination of well-preserved remains, the density of its population, its strong artistic and cultural traditions, and its continuity over time.
