History of Iznik
Iznik, known in antiquity as Nicaea, is one of the most historically significant cities in Anatolia. Its strategic location near Lake Iznik made it an important political, religious, and cultural center for more than two thousand years.
Antiquity & Roman Period
The city was founded in the 4th century BC and later became part of the Roman Empire. During this time, Nicaea developed strong city walls, streets, and public buildings. It gained lasting importance in 325 AD, when the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea was held here, shaping the foundations of Christian belief.
Byzantine Period
Under Byzantine rule, Iznik remained a key religious and administrative center. In 787 AD, the Seventh Ecumenical Council was held in the city, restoring the veneration of icons in Christianity. After the Fourth Crusade in 1204, Iznik briefly served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire in exile.
Seljuk & Ottoman Periods
Iznik was captured by the Seljuks in 1075 and later by the Ottomans in 1331, becoming one of the first Ottoman capitals. During the Ottoman era, the city flourished as a center of ceramic and tile production, creating the famous Iznik tiles that decorate imperial mosques and palaces in Istanbul.
Modern Iznik
Today, Iznik is a peaceful town where Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman heritage coexist. Its ancient walls, religious monuments, museums, and traditional tile workshops make it a unique destination for history, faith, and culture lovers.
